Saline County takes its name from the Saline River and the local springs from which the salt works once flourished in the region. Today the area is better known for its combination of fertile bottomlands bordering the Saline River and hilly ridges alongside the Shawnee National Forest. Coal mining makes up the largest percentage of industrial employment in Saline County. The county was once home to the Will Scarlet Mine and the Delta Mine. Currently the Galatia Mine is the largest underground coal mine in Illinois currently employing close to 500 workers. A portion of the Willow Lake Mine and the Wildcat Hills surface mine are other active mines on the eastern extreme of Saline County and western Gallatin County employing another 500 miners. The mining and exploration industry feeds other sources of employment, such as coal and materials hauling and excavation.
This stunning region lies directly north of the Shawnee National Forest and is ideal for campers, nature lovers, fishermen and hunters alike. Rugged heavily-timbered hills are interspersed with second growth areas that provide ideal cover for whitetail deer, wild turkey, and other game species. Much of the bottomlands provide excellent late season waterfowl hunting areas.
